SVWC Introduces Its New Mission and Vision

There is a quiet movement underway in how the nation's leading Life Plan Communities understand their purpose. The strongest among them speak of a retirement of vitality, purpose, community, and wellness in every dimension. Their mission is a test for every decision they make. Recently, Shenandoah Valley Westminster Canterbury (SVWC) added its voice to that movement with the introduction of a new mission and vision, a distillation of nearly four decades of community life. The statements were not written in a boardroom alone. Residents, team members, and board leadership all worked collaboratively through a strategic process to shape the mission.
Our Mission
SVWC is a faith-inspired, wellness-focused community empowering purposeful, dignified, and joyful living in a natural setting.
Faith-inspired acknowledges the spiritual foundation on which SVWC was built and the conviction that aging well is a matter of meaning. Wellness-focused reflects a philosophy of whole-person well-being, the understanding that intellectual curiosity, physical vitality, social connection, and spiritual depth are inseparable strands of a flourishing life that can be found in community. SVWC creates the conditions, the freedom, and the security within which each resident designs a life of their own choosing, whether that means mastering a new discipline, deepening a lifelong passion, giving back in the local Winchester community, or savoring an unhurried morning trail walk on the picturesque campus in the northern Shenandoah Valley.
Our Vision
A caring community where all thrive.
Thriving is the principal aspiration of the entire community. SVWC’s vision encompasses residents across every level of living, the team members who serve alongside them, and the families and neighbors woven into the fabric of this campus.
A Strategic Plan for What Comes Next
As SVWC prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2027, the organization is in the midst of a community-wide strategic planning effort. Articulating the mission and vision now ensures that every element of the strategic plan, from services to partnerships to the design of the physical campus itself, flows from a shared understanding of purpose. The first 40 years saw the development of one of the most respected Life Plan Communities in Virginia. The new mission and vision are a deliberate investment in the next 40, a commitment to remain as vibrant, relevant, and essential to this region in the future as SVWC is today.
SVWC CEO Jeannie Shiley said, “communities that are leaders in this field understand that a mission earns its meaning in daily practice, in the rigor of wellness and community-making, the depth of cultural and spiritual life, and the genuine warmth between the people who live and work together. SVWC's new mission and vision were drawn from exactly those sources, and they now serve as the north star for our next chapter.”
