National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about bone health and encourage proactive habits for a stronger, more independent future. At Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC), we’re committed to helping our residents stay connected to each other, to their health, and to a lifestyle that supports vitality at every stage.

As a faith-based Lifecare community nestled on 87 serene acres in Winchester, Virginia, we know that health and peace of mind go hand in hand. That’s why we’re proud to support our residents with educational resources, preventative care, and a wellness-focused way of life.

What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes bones to become brittle and fragile—often without warning until a fracture occurs. It most commonly affects the hips, spine, and wrists, making it a significant concern for older adults.

Risk Factors:

  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes (especially in post-menopausal women)
  • Inadequate calcium and vitamin D
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Family history

Why Osteoporosis Awareness Matters at SVWC

At SVWC, we’re Connected for Life—and that means we take care of each other. Raising awareness during May helps our residents take small, proactive steps to prevent injury, maintain independence, and enjoy the enriched lifestyle they’ve chosen here.

  • Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and collards
  • Fish high in vitamin D, like salmon and sardines
  • Fortified breakfast cereals and orange juice

Stay Active, Stay Independent

  • Walking paths throughout our wooded campus
  • Group classes like yoga, Pilates, and balance training
  • Fitness center with strength and resistance equipment
  • Aquatic classes in our indoor pool

Skip the Bone-Damaging Habits

SVWC supports wellness in body and spirit. That includes:

  • Reducing alcohol and caffeine intake
  • Avoiding tobacco
  • Access to health education and lifestyle coaching

Schedule Preventative Screenings

Bone density testing (DEXA scans) is essential for early detection. Residents are encouraged to speak with their SVWC health care provider about screening options and prevention plans.
