Our History

A Model of Care

More than 30 years ago, parishioners at the Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester, Virginia, saw a need and set a goal to create a first-class retirement community. They adopted the Westminster-Canterbury model, where both the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches share sponsorship.

1982

The family of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Lawrence, Jr. (pictured above), who were members of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, Virginia, generously donated land for our beautiful campus, which grew with subsequent purchases to 65 acres.

1987

Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury welcomed its first residents.

2019-2020

Additional acres of adjacent land was purchased, which now brings us to 87 acres. Many of the original leaders or members of their families remain active and support the mission and vision of our community to this day.

We are a Lifecare community for active, retired adults. Currently we do not have availability in our higher levels of care (2024) for direct admissions to assisted living, memory care, or skilled nursing. These higher levels of care are reserved for the members of our community. To join a wait list for these higher levels, please submit your form and a member of our sales team will send more information and potential wait times.
