Celebrate Earth Day in the Shenandoah Valley

April is one of the most beautiful times of year to be in the Shenandoah Valley. Dogwoods bloom along the roadsides, the Blue Ridge Mountains glow green against the sky, and the air carries that particular freshness that only comes with spring. For residents and visitors alike, Earth Day on April 22 is less of a reminder to appreciate nature and more of an excuse to spend even more time in it. Whether you are looking for a peaceful morning walk, a scenic drive, or a glass of wine with a view, the Winchester area has plenty of ways to celebrate the planet this month.
Parks and Trails Worth Exploring
- Winchester Green Circle Trail – This 6.3-mile trail connects many of Winchester's best green spaces, winding through Shawnee Springs Park, along Town Run, and past Abrams Creek Wetland. It is a great option for walkers and cyclists who want to explore the city at a relaxed pace while staying close to nature.
- The Trails at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley – One of the most distinctive outdoor spaces in the region, the MSV's free art park spans 90 acres of fields, woods, and wetlands just a short drive from campus. More than three miles of paved, ADA-accessible paths wind past sculptures and outdoor installations, making it equal parts nature walk and cultural experience. The park is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, and leashed dogs are welcome.
- Abrams Creek Wetlands – Located just outside of downtown Winchester, this preserve offers paved trails ideal for a gentle walk or bike ride. It is a favorite among birdwatchers, particularly in spring when migratory species pass through the valley.
- Clearbrook Park – Just 15 minutes north of SVWC, Clearbrook Park is a lovely spot for a low-key afternoon outdoors. The park features a fishing lake, paved walking paths, picnic areas, and plenty of open green space to enjoy the warmer weather.
- Sky Meadows State Park – About 35 minutes southeast of Winchester, Sky Meadows offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Northern Virginia. With more than 20 miles of trails, sweeping pastoral views, and access to a section of the Appalachian Trail, it is a wonderful destination for those who want to venture a little further into the landscape this Earth Month.
Raise a Glass Outdoors
The Winchester area is home to several wineries set against some of the most scenic countryside in Virginia, making them natural destinations for an Earth Day outing.
- Valerie Hill Vineyard and Winery – Located just south of Winchester near Stephens City, Valerie Hill is an 18-acre farm winery with deep roots in Virginia's rural heritage. The tasting room is housed in a beautifully preserved Federal-style brick manor dating back to 1807, and the surrounding grounds are as picturesque as the wines themselves.
- Briede Family Vineyards – This boutique winery in Winchester is committed to sustainable farming practices and produces small-batch wines from hand-picked grapes. Their use of French hybrid varietals that are rare in the region makes for a truly unique tasting experience, and the vineyard is dog-friendly to boot.
- James Charles Winery and Vineyard – With panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, James Charles Winery is the kind of place that makes an afternoon feel like a getaway. The family-owned vineyard offers tastings, tours, and live music, all set against a backdrop that reminds you just how gorgeous this corner of Virginia really is.
If wine is not your thing, the Winchester area has no shortage of craft breweries worth stepping outside for. Vibrissa Beer and Kitchen in Old Town Winchester has a spacious outdoor patio with fire pits, a full food menu, and a dog-friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to linger. Winchester Brew Works, just a few blocks from the pedestrian mall, offers outdoor picnic tables, rotating house-made drafts, and a welcoming, community-minded vibe. For something a little further afield, Backroom Brewery in Middletown started as an herb farm and still grows its own hops on-site, making it about as fitting an Earth Day stop as you will find in the valley.
Earth Day Every Day at SVWC
Of course, one of the greatest gifts of life at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury is that you do not have to go far to find natural beauty. The 175-acre campus is a destination in its own right, thoughtfully designed to keep residents connected to the outdoors throughout every season.
Over 2.5 miles of natural surface walking trails wind through the woods, past a peaceful pond, and through meadows where wildflowers bloom each spring. Walking sticks are available at every campus entrance, and benches are placed along the trails so you can pause, breathe, and take it all in. Beyond the trails, the campus is home to a putting green, a meditation garden, a wildflower garden, a nature preserve, a resident garden, and a croquet court — each one a quiet invitation to step outside and enjoy the season.
At SVWC, the Shenandoah Valley is not just a backdrop. It is part of the everyday experience.
