The new exhibit in the Lawrence Gallery at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC) opens next Friday, Nov. 9 and will remain through January 4, 2019. Artist, Kathy Chumley grew up in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, in a family of artists. Her father, John Chumley, is a noted artist in the region, and his paintings can be found in many a home and business in the Valley.
Kathy says that color-mixing went on at the kitchen table and viewings were held in the living room. While posing for many figure paintings, she was allowed to peek over her father’s shoulder at works in progress. Learning much from this exposure, it seemed natural to join the “family business” and become an artist herself. Lessons at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and instruction from sister Bonnie Chumley helped Kathy develop her talents.
It is quite evident that the artistic gene was passed on to Kathy, as you observe the skilled treatment of light and shadows, and feel the movement in the water and shrubbery. She paints in oil on canvas or panels, and her subject matter includes gardens and florals, landscapes, seascapes, buildings, people, and still life. With the holiday season approaching, the timing is perfect to consider purchasing a lovely Kathy Chumley original. Prices range from $275 - $2,000.
The opening reception is Nov. 9 from 5:30 - 7 pm. The public is welcome to attend that evening or view the exhibit any day, through Jan. 4, 2019, between 9 am and 7 pm. For further information, contact Kitty Zuckerman, Marketing Specialist at 540-665-5915.
