Leah’s Legacy

The Art Committee at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC) is looking forward to the new exhibit opening next Friday, September 14 and running through November 6. Leah Brumback was an exceptional artist who taught painting classes at SVWC for approximately twenty years. Many of her students were with her throughout that time period. The “Wednesday painting group” formed a close, family-like bond, and thanks to Leah’s input, their skills improved markedly.

Sadly, Leah passed away suddenly, last fall. It was an enormous blow for the tight-knit group, and they questioned whether to continue meeting without their gifted mentor. SVWC was happy to have them keep gathering to paint on campus, and the artists knew that Leah would have wanted that. A few new individuals have joined the Wednesday group since then, and say that they enjoy the comradery, but regret that they never had the privilege of knowing Leah Brumback.

The eleven artists participating in this show include Ed Bell, Shirley Bruce, Shirley Coffin, Barbara DeChene, Joseph Galletta, Loretta Hugel, Bonnie Kaplan, Diane Luttrell, Susan Repic, Sally Seabright and Vicky Slaughter. Visitors will see a variety of subject matter, and mediums, to include oil, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media.

An opening Artists’ Reception will take place in Lawrence Gallery on Friday, September 14 from 5:30 - 7 pm. The public is welcome to attend that evening or to view the exhibit any day between 9 am and 7 pm. Many of the pieces will be for sale as well.
