The Color of Joy
Two artists, Kelly McDermott and Lisa Fisher, have joined forces to present a burst of bold artwork in our Lawrence Gallery. The Color of Joy is a dynamic dialogue between two artists who embrace exuberance as a creative force. Through layered surfaces, gestural marks, stitched interventions, and expressive forms, Kelly McDermott and Lisa Fisher explore how color can carry emotion, memory, and meaning.
In a world that often rewards subtlety and restraint, this exhibition celebrates fullness—of hue, of texture, of spirit. The works shimmer with energy: saturated pigments, tactile fibers, and rhythmic compositions that invite close looking and emotional connection. Joy here is not simplistic or naive. It is layered. It is resilient. It is built from marks, stitches, revisions, and risk. Through their individual practices, both artists demonstrate how the act of making can transform materials—and in doing so, transform us.
An opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 16, from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. in the Abbey above the main lobby. SVWC is located at 300 Westminster-Canterbury Dr. Call 540-665-0156 with any questions. Feel free to visit the Lawrence Gallery any day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
