We’re Connected for Life.
At Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, we say our residents are Connected for Life. That connection is anchored in our retirement community’s spiritual origin and extends across all aspects of daily life, from the warm bond that exists among residents to the stimulating lifestyle that continually opens doors to new relationships and new horizons.
A Connection to Community
Being Connected for Life starts with the community itself. In 2017, Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury celebrated 30 years of service to our residents and the greater Winchester community. The community grew from the vision of parishioners at the Christ Episcopal Church in Winchester who saw a need for a first-class community to serve seniors. They adopted the Westminster-Canterbury model, where both the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches share sponsorship.
The original cornerstone for SVWC was laid on October 13, 1985, and the first apartments were opened to residents two years later, in 1987. Over the last quarter-century, the community has steadily expanded its outreach and breadth of services.
From our initial offering of 52 apartments, Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury today has nearly 400 residents living in 163 apartments, 49 lovely cottages, two single family homes, and in private assisted living and skilled nursing residences, all surrounded by 65 acres of woodlands and wildflowers.
A Connection to Quality and Excellence
Residents live confidently, knowing the retirement community they have chosen is accredited by CARF, the independent authority that evaluates continuing care retirement communities for fiscal stewardship and quality of services. Only about 12 percent of CCRC’s in America earn this distinction.
In another vote of confidence, SVWC was awarded a four-star rating by the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services, following an extensive evaluation of our healthcare facility.
A Connection to Security and Peace of Mind
As a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), SVWC offers residents a connection to ongoing health care in one familiar location. Here, residents enjoy independent living, all the while knowing that, should it become necessary, they have immediate access to advanced care in assisted living, the Health Center or our memory support neighborhood.
In addition, the security of Lifecare adds to peace of mind, offering a practical way to plan for future health challenges. Lifecare provides assurance for residents and their families that quality, individualized health care is consistently available for no additional financial investment.
Our connection to residents is further exemplified by the SVWC Fellowship Fund, which provides confidential financial assistance to qualified residents so they can continue to live here in dignity even in times of financial hardship.
A Connection to the Local Area
Residents feel an immediate connection to Winchester upon learning that it has been named by AARP as one of the top 10 places to retire in the United States.
There are many reasons for this distinction, including restaurants and recreational opportunities, the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, the city’s proximity to major interstates and airports, and the nearby excitement of Washington, D.C. Residents also enjoy the region’s art and culture as showcased at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley.
The local connection is a two-way street. Being Connected for Life means SVWC supports deserving community organizations, hosting and sponsoring a wide range of local events. We also invite community groups to use our meeting space. In addition, residents collectively give more than 1,000 hours monthly to a diverse group of area non-profits.
