Job Summary

The nursing assistant provides basic resident care and administers medications to residents in the Assisted Living unit under the supervision of a licensed nurse and assists in the maintenance of the unit environment.

SALARY

Required Education, Experience, Skills, Licensure

1.                 CertifiedNursing Assistant licensed in theState of Virginia.License must be in good standing.

2.                 Completionof Medication Aide training program, licensed in the State of Virginia forMedication Aide.  Must be in goodstanding.

3.                 CPR/FirstAide certification.

6.                 Mustattend refresher courses yearly to maintain medication certification.

 

7.                 Followsand supports the policies and procedures established by SVWC.

 

8.                 Maintainsprofessional appearance by adhering to dress code and being neatly groomed.

 

9.                 Adheresto professional standards of ethics at all times.

 

10.            Responsiblefor maintaining current State license and providing SVWC with proof of suchprior to expiration date.

 

Essential duties/Responsibilities

1.                 Acceptsreports regarding status of assigned residents at beginning of shift and givesreport at end of shift.    

             

2.                 Performsdirect and indirect resident care activities as ordered and consistent with thefacility’s policies and procedures.  Suchactivities include:

 

·                    bathingresidents (bedbath, tub, shower)

·                    toiletingresidents (bedpan, urinal, bedside commode, bathroom)

·                    givingperineal care

·                    performinggrooming activities (hair care, nail care)

·                    shampooingresidents’ hair

·                    assistin providing oral hygiene and denture care

·                    measuringintake and output

·                    collectingurine and stool specimens

·                    transferringresidents from bed, chair, wheelchair

·                    assistingresidents with use of walkers, wheelchairs, canes

·                    positioningresidents in chairs, beds, wheelchairs

·                    Assistwith turning and changing position of residents

·                    makingoccupied and unoccupied beds

·                    weighingresidents

·                    takingvital signs

·                    Understands the implications of resident’s rightsregarding medications, treatment decisions and confidentiality

·                    Recognizes emergencies and other health-threateningconditions and responds accordingly

·                    Identifies medication terminology and abbreviations

·                    Assists with the administration of psychotropicdrugs.

·                    Implement standard precautions

·                    Dispose of infectious waste according to Virginia state law

·                    Maintain resident’s medical records according todesignated policy

·                    Prepare, medication administration record (MAR) andother medication forms according to procedure

·                    Demonstrate the five rights of medicationadministration

·                    Follow proper procedure for pouring/preparingmedication

·                    Assist resident to administer oral medications anddocumentation of medication administration

·                    Report and document resident’s refusal to takemedication

·                    Document medication errors

·                    Store and secure all medications

·                    Assist resident to administer:

·                    Understands the basic facts about diabetes

·                    Recognizes the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemiaand hyperglycemia

·                    Assist the resident with blood glucose monitoring

·                    Administer insulin injections

·                    performingpost mortem care

·                    practicinguniversal precautions and special isolation techniques (gown and glove use,double bagging, disposal of contaminated linens and trash)

·                    makebeds as needed, changing linens as needed.

 

3.                 Practiceseffective communication techniques with residents, visitors and coworkers.

 

4.                 Protectsresidents from complications and injuries.

 

5.                 Respectsresidents rights (e.g., knocks on door before entering room, addresses residentby name, allows resident to make decisions).

 

6.                 Respondsto all call lights promptly.

 

7.                 Assistswith admissions, transfers, and discharges of residents.

 

8.                 Transportsand escorts residents.

 

9.                 Documentscare as necessary.

 

10.            Participatesin the development, implementation, and evaluation of resident care plans.

 

11.            Keepsequipment, supplies and resident furniture clean.

 

12.            Keepsequipment clean; reports housekeeping and maintenance needs.

 

13.            Reportsto charge nurse:

·                    changesin residents’ status

·                    residents’responses to care

·                    equipmentand supply needs

·                    repair/maintenanceneeds

·                    safetyhazards

·                    unusualoccurrences or observations

16.              Directs resident and visitor complaints to nursein charge.

 

17.             Assistsphysicians and nurses with treatments and procedures.

 

18.             Attendsstaff development activities to improve knowledge and skills and to maintaincompetency and certification.

 

19.             Readsresident care plan to identify residents’ needs.

 

20.             Accuratelydocuments pertinent resident information on the Activities of Daily Living formfor each resident.

 

21.             Exhibitsgood understanding of department dress code as evidenced by neat, professionalappearance.

 

22.             Remainsflexible to cover needs of patients.

 

23.             Worksindependently.

 

24.             Arrivesto work on scheduled time of arrival.

 

25.       Provides proper notification for absenceand/or tardiness.

 

26.       Facilitates resident directed culture,gives direct care as needed, which may                 include preparation of simplecooked food for residents after normal dining hours.

27.  Maybe required to wear a fit tested regulator as appropriate during transmissionbased precautions.

 

28.        Performs other duties as assigned.

·        Musthave mobility for all parts of the body, walking, bending, lifting, reachingabove head and use of hands.

·        Musthave manual dexterity, fine motor skills (typing, computer, etc.)

·        Sometasks may require sitting for 40% of the work day.

·        Mustbe able to stand and /or mobilize by walking for 100% of an 8 hour shift.
