Bob & Marrea Riggs
Freedom and comfort have special meaning for Bob and Marrea Riggs, two of Westminster-Canterbury’s newest residents. The freedom to travel, to stay active in their church, to continue their volunteer work and to stay physically fit were paramount in selecting Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury. They moved to Winchester from Northern Virginia in 1996 when they retired from their busy careers. Bob was in the Marines for twenty-four years and served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Marrea spent thirty years in software development for the Department of Defense. Married for thirty-four years, they share many interests. For example, they are both avid readers and are both currently writing books – Bob a novel on the Korean War and Marrea a children’s book. It is through this love of writing that they met some folks at Westminster-Canterbury when they joined a writers group that meets at the community. Finding the staff and residents friendly, they immediately felt welcome. They also took a closer look at the community when Marrea’s father had health concerns. Realizing that they needed to not only provide a comfortable, caring place for her parents, they understood the importance of planning for their own future. Marrea’s parents, Stan and Marylou Stokwitz, have moved to an assisted living suite at Westminster-Canterbury, while Bob and Marrea have selected a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment that faces a new expansive courtyard. Planning for their future and caring for loved ones while living for today are just the beginning of the benefits the Riggs have found at their new home.
